The club's mission
Contributing to the development of the skater in a team discipline where respect, attitude, commitment and communication are priorities.
Who are we?
Nova Synchronized Skating is a non-profit synchronized skating club located on Montreal's South Shore, primarily in St-Hubert. Founded in 2004 following the reorganization of the elite South Shore and Marquises de St-Hubert synchronized skating clubs, its aim was to promote the growth of synchronized skating on Montreal's South Shore. It is one of the largest clubs in Canada exclusively dedicated to synchronized skating. Its skaters come from various cities on the South Shore and surrounding areas, and are members of their respective figure skating clubs. Club Nova celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024!
The club participates in competitions sanctioned by Skate Canada and Skate Quebec and has committed to its members to follow the rules of these organizations.
The club is run by volunteer administrators. It has an average of 100 skaters in its managed teams, ranging from STAR to Senior categories, and another 100 in the adult categories. While the club offers streamlined management and administration for the adult teams, these teams are self-managed, allowing each team to choose its own coach. For the managed teams, composed of minors or adults still in school, the club is involved at all levels, from assigning coaches and selecting chaperones and team managers to scheduling on-ice and off-ice training.
Team formation is handled by a group of paid coaches who select skaters based on on-ice evaluation camps, typically held between March and May. These camps are open to all skaters interested in this wonderful sport. A small participation fee is charged to cover evaluation costs. Following team selection in each category, skaters are required to remain members of their local figure skating club. In the Elementary (STAR 3) to Intermediate (Gold) categories, skaters must continue developing their skills at their local club with a coach of their choice, in addition to practicing synchronized skating with their team.
Since the 2023-2024 season, a specific category at the Nova club, called "Mini-Synchro," has been created to allow young beginners to experience synchronized skating. This way, a young beginner who doesn't qualify for one of the STAR categories can still experience synchronized skating.
Over the years, the club has developed various regulations, a code of conduct and commitments to promote a better understanding among parents and skaters of their obligations, and these regulations are reviewed at the beginning of each season.
The teams are coached by Skate Canada member coaches holding the appropriate coaching certifications for their category. Various specialists are brought in to support the teams as needed, including kinesiologists, sports psychologists, choreographers, technical coaches, and dance instructors. A coaching committee for the managed teams has been established, and a coach representative sits on the board of directors.
Since 1995, the club has organized one of the oldest synchronized skating competitions in Canada, the "Invitation Synchro Nova St-Hubert" (formerly known as the "Invitation Patinage Synchronisé St-Hubert," or simply "Invitation St-Hubert"), which takes place in late November or early December. It is one of the first competitions of the season and one of the largest competitions held in Quebec, generally over a single day. Now, more than 1,300 skaters from Quebec, Ontario, and the United States participate. You can find more information about this competition by going to the "Invitation Nova St-Hubert" tab .
